Austen In August

 photo 340cd85e-a074-45f2-93f0-4e9cf2aabccc_zps0869e66f.jpg

As someone who has recently discovered Jane Austen I was excited to discover that Jenna of The Lost Generation Reader was hosting Austen in August. The event allows Bloggers to participate in various ways including posting reviews, commentary, as well as other Austen related topics. I cannot wait to begin reading what other bloggers have to say.

I will be posting my entry on Pride and Prejudice shortly. If time permits I hope to put up a second blog up later in the month on another Austen work.

Anyone else who wants to participate or to just read what I expect to be intriguing and insightful posts written by other bloggers should head over to Austen in August. Participants need to sign up.

While over there, I encourage everyone to take a look around. Jenna’s site is very literary and she has some great commentary on Jane Austen’s as well as other writers. Her site is well worth exploring.

Many Thanks to Jenna for hosting what looks to be a great event!

So many books, so little time said...

Oh I look forward to your post, I read Pride & Prejudice when I was a kid and again as a young teen. Aim to read it as an adult.

Hi Lainy - I think like many men (Though I should not speak for all of us) I ignored jane Austen when I was younger.

Having read Pride and Prejudice and having started Emma, I believe she clearly is one of our cultures great writers.

Aaaaah - P & P - one of my favourites :-)

Austen in August is a wonderful time - I'm sure you will find it a rewarding event.

Hi Brona - Thanks for stopping by. I have actually finished the book and I am putting the finishing touches on my post.

It was truly a phenomenal book worthy of being one of your favorites.

I look forward to reading your post on Pride and Prejudice as it's one of my favourite book from school. When I revisited it ten years or so ago, I was struck by how money and the characters' financial situations influences much of the narrative.

I likewise look forward to your comments on Pride and Prejudice. That is one of the few books that I did not appreciate when reading it for High School English class. Only as an adult did I discover the humor and other qualities that made it special. As a result I've become a fan of Austen and will consider joining "Austen in August".
As I write this I'm enjoying Albinoni in August. If you have not already you might try him -- heavenly music.

Brian Joseph, thank you for posting about Austen in August. I will take a look at what it entails. I look forward to your review of P & P.

Hi Jaqui - The conflict between money and true emotions was indeed an important part of the book

It is a major theme of Anthony Trollope I see just how much he was influenced by Austen.

Brian Joseph said...

Hi James - I must admit that I cannot imagine liking Jane Austen when I was younger.

One changes indeed!

I do like Albinoni a lot! It has been a long time since I have listened to him. It is high time that I got back to listening to some Baroque music.

Hi Suko - Thanks for stopping by.

This looks to be a great event.

A few years ago, I spent months watching all the film adaptations. My own personal film festival.

Last summer was my Austen summer - I've read all of her books and some biographies. Else I would have loved to join you. I might do the same, only with the Brontës. As soon as I've finished The Warden.
I'm looking forward to your reviews.

Glad you're doing Austen in August too--should be a fun event and I'll be interested to read your post on P&P. Is this a first read for you?

Thank you for your kind words, Brian! I look forward to your Pride and Prejudice post. Cheers!

Brian Joseph said...

Hi Guy - As I am new to Austen I have not seen any of the films or miniseries. I am already on my second novel so I will be sure to begin watching them.

Brian Joseph said...

Hi Caroline - I am beginning to see how Austen is a great enough writer to read all her works as well as some biographies.

I cannot wait to read what you have to say about The Warden.

Hi Jane - It is a first read and my first Jane Austen novel period!

I have actually finished it and am just putting the finishing touches on my post.

Hi Jenna - Thank you again for hosting the event!

Normally I would gladly participate. I love Jane Austen and I'd like to reread some of her books.

Alas this month I'm not in the mood for British lit. I'm looking forward to reading your reviews, though.

Have fun!

Hi Emma - I have been reading a lot of Victorian Literature lately. However, it certainly has unique characteristics and I can imagine not being in the mood for it.

The other thing is that while the event has been planed for a long time, I have jumped in at the last minute.

Brian Joseph said...

Hi Heidi - Thanks!

Jenna's Blog is not just filled with great commentary, but it is unique.

I feel so guilty and, well, uneducated (thick as we'd say here) but try as I might I just cannot bring myself to enjoy her works. Something I'd hoped would change as I got older I'm afraid I'm still not inclined. Looking forward to your post as always though Brian.

Brian Joseph said...

Hi Tracy - Interesting. I only started reading her recently. I would not have liked these books when I was younger for sure.

Do you like other Victorian Literature? I actually find Anthony Trollope to be very similar to her in style.

As if I needed an excuse to read Austen.

Oh my gosh Brian, I am so happy you are reading Austen! She is a favorite classics author. I've also really enjoyed the BBC productions of her novels, they do a fantastic job of it.
I signed up for Austen in August as well and am trying to read Sense and Sensibility.
I can't wait to read your post on P&P. I've read it a few times. Persuasion is another wonderful one.

Brian Joseph said...

Hi Sharon - You made me laugh!

If you can join us it would be super!

Brian Joseph said...

Hi Naida - The P & P post is coming soon!

As I have mentioned I have not seen any of the films but I plan to.

I have actually started Emma, however i am working so much that I may need to scramble to get a post up on that one by the end of the month.

Lindsay said...

Great idea to join in with this Brian, I would if I thought I'd manage to read one but I don't know if I would. I think she is a brilliant writer, I loved P&P and also Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park. I would like to try reading Persuasion soon.

Brian Joseph said...

Hi Lindsay - It is a bit of a last minute thing.

I have finished Pride and Prejudice and have begun Emma. Austen is a great writer.

Felicity Grace Terry said...

Not keen on any of the so called classics Brian though last year (the year before?) I did read some Dickens as part of a Christmas Read Challenge and did quite enjoy those to varying degrees.

That said I'm currently reading Cider With Rosie (hardly Victorian I realise) and I'm really, really enjoying that so perhaps this is the start of my love affair with the classics.

Brian Joseph said...

Hi Tracy - There is a lot of diversity within what I would define as Classic Literature.

I myself am new to Austen. She is such a beloved author for so many people. I find her very accessible. He style is easy to read. Her plots and characters are fun. I found that pride and Prejudice to me more enjoyable then Dickens usually is.

I have not read Cider With Rosie. I am looking forward to your thoughts on it.
