Out Visiting At the Relentless Reader - To Kill a Mocking Bird

Many thanks to Jennifer at The Relentless Reader for inviting me over to her blog to write a guest post! I am so honored that she is allowing me to share my thoughts with her readers. When Jennifer and I discussed the nature of my post, I suggested that she choose either a favorite book or just a book that she was interested in hearing another reader’s thoughts on. I would read the book and write commentary for her blog. Jennifer chose Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mocking Bird as it was not only a favorite of hers, but she was in the midst of a reread.

I had never read Lee’s famous novel. As it turns out, this was a great choice. Readers will need to look here at Jennifer's blog to find out why.

While over there, please check out as many of Jennifer’s posts as you have time for. I think that anyone who enjoys my writings will love Jennifer’s site. She has terrific taste in books that usually mirrors my own (After all, if I thought that she would have chosen something like Fifty Shades of Grey, I would never, of course, suggest that she pick a book for me read!). Her blog is also witty and funny. Though she usually comments upon serious books, both intellectual content as well as amusing tidbits can be found on her site.

  1. Brian: I highly recommend the non-fiction book Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles Shields. It's excellent & provides some marvellous background.

  2. Hi Guy - Thanks for the recommendation.

I do wish that I knew more about Lee. I know that she has not had a lot of output after To Kill a Mockingbird but I do not know why. I also heard that she refuses to allow this book to be published as an ebook. I know that such aversion to ebooks is true of some writers. I am curious as to what Lee's particular reasons are.

  5. Brian: If you have those questions, then the Shields book is for you. Although the answer to the e-book question isn't directly there, but I think you can guess the answer from reading about the author.

The book also goes into Capote and his relationship w/Harper Lee, and how they worked on In Cold Blood together. The author of the book is clearly fascinated w/his subject, and it's very well presented.

  7. Hey, Brian!

I haven't been by in a few days, and now I see that you've been visiting yourself. Lol.

I've dropped by Jennifer's blog recently, and read her wonderful thoughts on "To Kill a Mockingbird". Loved them!! Gotta be back for more! I'm now following her, as well.

And what a coincicence...I've been thinking of inviting you to guest post on both of my blogs, if possible -- a fiction-related post for A NIGHT'S DREAM OF BOOKS, and a nonfiction post for my other blog, MINDSPIRIT BOOK JOURNEYS. Sure hope you agree to at least one of them! I'd love to have my readers peruse one of your excellent articles!! : )

  11. Hi Brian..Just read your review of To Kill A Mockingbird. I read it so many years ago and am now anxious to re-read it. You captured the story and characters so well.
Didn't know you did guest reviews. Salman Rushdie just came out with a memoir..Have you heard about it?

    Your blog looks great!
